I've had this game sitting around on my PS4 thanks to PS Plus, and I finally thought to try playing it a couple of days back.
Not a lot to say, except for one thing:
( I'm like two hours in )

So, I've never really had a strong stomach for horror games.
It's weird, because when I was a kid, I loved horror films. Slasher flicks, especially -- after all, the 90s were a pretty good time for that sort of thing. Eventually, as I got older, I started to find all the meaningless violence/gore/horror experienced by the characters upsetting, probably because I had become mature enough to feel real empathy.
Horror games were worse for me, because usually either
a) I, as the player, was the one being faced with danger/psychologically horrific imagery/extreme stress, or
b) I, as the player, was carrying out (often realistic-looking) violence against characters in the game, usually ones who had been rendered conveniently less human by the circumstances, such as zombification.
The commonality there being that everything is just closer in a game. Regardless of what your role is in the story, you're in it rather than just a passive observer as with a film. And for someone like me -- high anxiety, yo -- that makes things a hell of a lot harder.
That said, I often find myself wanting to play horror games. The genre is capable of some really great things, and it's really cool to see the work that the developers and writers put into making the experience as terrifying as possible.
Which is why, when I saw a lot of horror stuff on sale on the PSN, I gave the Resident Evil series a gander for the first time in something like a decade.
( Mild, mostly gameplay-related spoilers for RE4, almost none beyond the first hour for RE7. )

I have problems with Persona 4: Dancing All Night so far. They aren't playthrough-halting problems, but they aren't quite peeves, either.
I'm something like an hour in, so don't worry too much about actual, for-real spoilers. ( Read more... )
All that said, the actual meat (sigh) of the story so far is enjoyable. And the gameplay feels really good, even if I suck at it a little. The interface makes Theatrhythm feel easy.

I wrote a little over 22k words this month, which is more than the entire rest of the year so far put together. Hot damn.
I hope other folks have been doing okay lately. Work has been crushing my face beneath its heel, and not in a fun way.

I'm a little ways into the movie. (Thanks, Netflix.)
I have little to say, other than, man, that CGI Tarkin is CGI. Like, wow.
Also, one more thing I'll put under the cut because I'm a huge sinner:

I got Zodiac Age on Wednesday. I'm as far as the party's trek through the Sandseas, which is to say I finally have the full party and am really goddamn tired of the sight of sand.
The game is a lot of fun so far. I haven't had as much chance to play with the hunts as I would like -- I haven't even joined Clan Centurio yet -- but the job system and fast forward feature have really revitalized an already great game.
--
Work is what it's always been -- exhausting, but usually tolerable -- but there are clouds on the horizon at both.
( boring work shit )

I bought a new laptop today.
It is a laptop, mind you. Not a netbook with a browser on it instead of an operating system. Meaning I can write things without worrying about my connection. And without eyestrain. Lemme tell you, it’s a relief.
The problem with spending so many years in retail is that I know just enough about the amount of pressure the Best Buy sales floor attendants are probably under to feel really bad about being the kind of customer that I am. I spent probably twenty minutes comparing the specs on the computers that were in my price range. This in itself probably weirded people out, because I was opening the control panel on all of them and looking at all the CPU and gigahertzes and whatnot instead of trusting the vague information offered on the tags, which was wrong in several places on multiple laptops. And then, after mulling it over for several minutes, I brought my selection to the register without any help from the salespeople, and purchased it sans any offers/bundles/et cetera.
I’m a monster.
Anyway, I don’t have a verdict on this Dell yet. The keyboard is pure bliss for my fingers, which along with my hands are big, and thus not a great fit for the Chromebook I’ve been struggling with for a month or two. The processor and whatnot seem to have decent-ish specs. I’ve already spent some time getting rid of the garbage that always comes preinstalled on PCs, and will probably keep catching little things and ripping them off my hard drive over the coming week.
I’m not sure what I want to name this one. I’m thinking Adelle, after the Final Fantasy Tactics A2 character, because haha, A Dell, I’m so funny, hyuck hyuck.
Watchin' Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy in between bits of doing laundry and cleaning. Spoilers for the entire film will presumably follow.

I am not going to talk about hard life shit here, other than to establish that life shit is hard right now and I could really use some healthy escapism.
- - - - - <------------ a firm, necessary barrier between hard life shit and me talking about yummy distractions
In Ocarina of Time, I am embroiled in the Fire Temple, as well as just plain broiled in the Fire Temple. After that there's the Shadow Temple, and then whatever comes after all the Temples are done. I did Water first, which was a miserable fucking slog, and then the Spirit Temple, the actual dungeony portions of which were great fun. The stealth in Gerudo Fortress was pretty awful to deal with until I realized you could just stun ("stun") the Gerudo by shooting them in the face with arrows. Reasonable!
I then spent the last few days' pitiful amount of free time (I'm back to working at both jobs, which feels so much more tiring after my "vacation" from the second that lasted for two weeks) either doing market research on romance novels or trying to figure out what I feel like playing, having decided to take a break from OOT. I initially wanted to play something in the Etrian Odyssey series, but then the announcement for an EO5 localization came out, so I put a pin in that for now and kept searching.
Last night I started a fresh playthrough of Final Fantasy XV. I was previously around 6 chapters in, but that was exactly three months ago, and even before that, I think I set the game down for at least a month before trying to pick it back up. I had a vague idea of what was going on in-story, but the gameplay and overall system of hunting/fishing/camping mechanics kind of eluded me, so I ditched the file and started over.
Hmm...I think I'll split off into another entry and liveblog a bit.

"Fractured wrist" is a scary phrase that can really mean any number of things. In my case, it means a tiny chip of bone got thrown off from where it's supposed to be when I tripped on the curb outside work a week ago. The tiny chip of bone is probably always going to be where it is now, and it really isn't that consequential in the broad scheme of things. The main issue is the ligaments/muscles in my wrist, which need around a month to heal.
I'm a lot more okay with this situation than I was last week. This is mostly because I switched braces today. The one I had for the last week was a cumbersome combo of a splint and some ACE bandages, which left my off hand completely unusable and led to the skin between my fingers getting really, really gross. Now I'm wearing -- well, just google "exos brace" and you'll get the gist. It leaves my fingers exposed, and holy fucking shit I can type again.
Like, damn, you have no idea how wonderful it is to be able to write again. Typity typity type. Type type. She sells sea shells on the sea shore.

I just got a look at the introductory trailer for the New Nintendo 2DS XL, and I don't know how I feel about it.
On the one hand, between it and the new games that are coming out at around the same time, it seems even clearer that the 3DS is here to stay for at least a while longer, as far as releases go. The Switch launch had me worried that the 3DS was on its deathbed, regardless of Nintendo's PR, but since then, the announcement of various new releases has put me at ease. This goes even further to allay what fears I had left. And as I don't give anything remotely resembling a shit about 3D, this might be a good upgrade for me later this year.
On the other hand, that hinge looks so fucking small compared to the vanilla 3DS XL. That thing is so gonna break.

I've been reading Cold Iron by Stina Leicht. I picked it off its shelf at the library without knowing what it was or having recognized the author's name; I was going by the genre (fantasy) and that was basically it. I avoided reading the front cover-flap blurb, but the author info blurb on the back flap mentioned that the series was "flintlock fantasy," which convinced me to put it in my basket.
So far, it's been enjoyable. Leicht does a really good job at the kind of fantasy world-building I like, slowly drawing the curtain back further and further to expose setting information in a way that feels organic. There's a lot of focus on "domination" magic -- which is basically mind control -- and the way it's become central to the fucked-up society that the perspective characters are trying to navigate. Fair warning, consent issues abound in this book.
As far as the POV characters go, I generally like them, but have had trouble with staying the course at times. A story isn't really going to go anywhere if its characters never do anything wrong -- if they never make bad or stupid choices -- but at times, this book gives me a horror movie vibe. More specifically, in the sense that I want to scream at thescreen page as the characters willingly shove their feet into bear traps.
